短期机械循环辅助（temporary Mechanical Circulatory Support）主要是为心源性休克患者提供暂时的（短则数小时，长则数周）血流动力学支持，以使其完全康复，或者用于更为长期支持手段如LVAD的过渡桥接方案。
作者对比了右心支持、左心支持以及双侧支持的几种器械，但没有涵盖以下几种情况：
1. ECPella (venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation [VA-ECMO] with an Impella for LV decompression)，
2. VA-ECMO with an intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP),
3. BiPella (left-sided support with an Impella 2.5/CP/5.5 and right-sided support with an Impella RP),
4. right-sided TandemHeart with an LV Impella.
